I am sitting down for breakfast in downtown Beijing at the Renaissance Hotel. You would not believe the food they have in here. I will tell you what I am having for breakfast this morning; just try not to be judgmental as it is a lot. A two egg omelet, 1 chicken sausage link, 1 beef sausage link, two pieces of bacon, small portion of roasted potatoes, a few banana chips and walnuts, some freshly cut pineapple and dragon fruit, a pastry, a small portion of soufflé, a glass of watermelon juice, a bottle of orange juice, and a cup of ginger tea. This is just my first trip to the five different breakfast bars. You would think I would have gained 20 pounds after eating this for breakfast for the past 3 days but according to my luxurious hotel suite bathroom scales I have gained only 1 pound. As I look down at the street four stories below me I see people riding bikes, walking, riding mopeds and I wonder what they had for breakfast. Most likely a broth soup of some kind. Do I feel guilty, hell yes I do (please excuse the French). I wonder what our tour guide Wang who lives in a small apartment with his pregnant wife that is in a farmer’s home had for breakfast. Probably some type of broth soup. We are the same in many ways as we both work hard to make a living for our family but the opportunities for me have been greater and most likely easier. By the way, the pastry I just ate was heavenly. I might have to get another one in a few minutes, ha!
Ok, I told you I would go back for round 2. Now I have one heavenly pastry, a small shaped heart shaped waffle (that will probably give me a heart attack) with peach puree on it, a small slice of date nut bread, more pineapple and dragon fruit, topped off with a glass of freshly squeezed watermelon and cantaloupe juice. I know right now some of you are saying, “Are you kidding me, did he really eat all of that stuff?, what a pig.” Others are probably saying there is no way he ate that much stuff, what a pig.” I will give you only once excuse to try and convince you I needed that food for fuel for my body. No forget it, I feel like a stuffed pig! Boy that pastry is heavenly.
I just got back to my room to finish up this blog. Today was a more relaxing day. We first went to a pearl showroom, then to Olympic park where we saw the “Birds Nest” where they held the opening and closing ceremonies to the 2008 summer Olympics. After that we drove to an art district that I absolutely loved. I thought I could spend a couple of days just there. It was called 789 district. After that the three of us treated ourselves to a 1 ½ hour traditional Chinese massage for about 25.00 US dollars. We got a ½ hour foot massage which we needed after walking the Great Wall of China and a 1 hour body massage. We were all in the same room and it was quite invigorating. I think we were all drained after that. I even had my massage therapist walk on my back. I had to just try it, ha! After that we came back to the hotel and went to eat some American food, Papa John’s pizza, breadsticks, and pepperoni rolls, yummy! We figured we might not have that opportunity in Nanjing. Tonight we might go get in the hot tub and pool on the 27th floor. We feel like we are in the Chinese royal family. Thanks Russell!
