This photo was taken at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is a temple built by a Ming Dynasty emperor to give homage to the gods so that farming would be good for the year. He would sacrifice several animals by burning them after he cut off the heads and tails which he buried in the earth. He did this twice a year during the solstice. It was a way to the tell the people that he did his part in making the gods happy and if they had a bad crop year he was not to be blamed. This photo of stone carved mountains and clouds was taken on one of the lower tiers of steps. It is between two vertical rows of steps. There were three levels of steps to get to the temple and each had a large carving. The temple building is a large round wooden structure and round meant for heaven and the surrounding area was square which represented the earth. There was a park there also with lots of people playing numerous card games, foot games, dancing, tai chi, etc. I even saw some dominos being played. Most were retired elderly spending leisure time outside.
